A Typical Afternoon

YOUNGER SCHOOL AGE
Kindergarten

Busses arrive at Weekday by 11:00. Teacher meets and greets the children

Small snack is available

Outdoor play in play yard

Lunch is served. Children and teacher eat lunch together to encourage pro-social behaviors and conversation.

Story time, lights dimmed.

Quiet time (1 hour). Children rest or engage in quiet activities independently.

A variety of materials and activities are available, including books, writing materials, snack, art, science, seasonal activities. Children are encouraged to take advantage of the many different experiences available.

Clean-up, group time, music and stories.

Active play in field or Activity Center.

OLDER SCHOOL AGE
Grades 1-5

Busses arrive at Weekday

Group meeting.

Children choose activities from arts & crafts, games, computers, science, workbench, homework, dramatic play.

Snack available. Children are encouraged to have a snack when they feel hungry or thirsty.

Active play outdoors or in Activity Center.

Quiet free choice activities in the classroom end the afternoon together.

Throughout both classes, socialization and problem-solving skills are emphasized. Peaceful conflict resolution and socially acceptable ways of interacting are taught through modeling, discussion, and stories.
